QUATERNARY EVOLUTION OF THE BENGUELA COASTAL UPWELLING SYSTEM: ITS RESPONSES TO LOCAL AND GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGES

This workshop aims at getting closer to an integrated view 1) of the
productivity history of the Benguela upwelling system, 2) of the
interrelationships between dynamics, biology and sedimentology at regional
scale, and 3) of the interrelationships between the evolution of this
regional ecosystem and global changes: climate, sea-level, thermo-haline
circulation and atmospheric CO2.

This workshop is motivated by the two recent research cruises
NAUSICAA/IMAGES 2 (1996) and ODP Leg 175 (1997) which recovered a series of
continuous sedimentary sections along the upper and lower slope off South
Africa, Namibia, and Angola. This meeting will be one of the first
opportunity to gather scientists working on IMAGES and ODP material from
this region.

>From a preliminary evaluation of key-topics and potential key-attendance, we
plan to divide the workshop into five interlinked sessions:

- 1 - Alongshore modulation/latitudinal migration of the upwelling system and
associated atmospheric and circulation changes (Chairman: P. Meyers).
- 2 - The role of Quaternary sea-level changes on cross-shelf fluctuations in
upwelling axes (Chairman: G. Wefer).
- 3 - Exploring the sedimentary record of biogenic production: upwelling
intensity vs diagenetic processes. Its relation with orbital cycles.
(Chairman: W. Berger).
- 4 - Movements of the Subtropical Convergence and dynamics of the Agulhas
retroflection at the polar end of the Benguela ecosystem (Chairman: J.
Rogers).
- 5 - Interhemispheric contrasts among the Atlantic (Benguela, NW Africa) and
Pacific (California, Peru) coastal upwelling systems (Chairman: T. Pedersen).

VENUE:

Residence ESPACOTEL, Carcans Maubuisson.
Located 60 km from Bordeaux, 700 m. from Carcans village (shops and various
services) and the lake of Hourtin-Carcans (the largest in France), 3 km from
the Atlantic Ocean, this site offers excellent and unexpensive facilities
for meetings and small conferences (accomodations, catering and conference
rooms) in a relaxing and quiet atmosphere.
Accomodation will be in the form of single or twin apartements, with access
to on-site recreational facilities (pool, gym, etc...).

Transport (free of charge for the participants) will be organized from
Bordeaux airport and railway station to Carcans-Maubuisson.

SCIENTIFIC PROGRAMME

The scientific programme will be finalized, based upon the reply to this
first announcement.
We plan to divide the three days meeting into five half-day sessions
starting on the morning of April 19th . Contributions will be in the form of
talks and posters (ca. 40 talks, 15 posters) with time secured for informal
discussions in-between each talks or at the end of each session.

Expected attendance: 50-60 (including students and post-docs).

FINANCES

There will be no registration fee.
Participants will be charged only for lodging and meals.

Current rates: per person, per day, including breakfast, lunch and dinner:
Single: F 510 (ca. US$ 85).
Twin or double: F 400 (ca. US$ 70).
Final rates will be given in the second circular.

The organizers are working at securing funds to assist underfinanced
students to attend the meeting. These funds will cover either partial or
full costs of accommodation (ie. excluding travel). Those requesting
financial assistance are invited to apply with the answer to this first
circular.

It will be send electronically on December 6th, 1999, to those only who
positively answered the first circular.
It will include an updated scientific and recreational programme, as well as
information on hotel reservation (one-day deposit).

THIRD CIRCULAR (March 2000):
This will include the final scientific programme and social events, as well
as infos on transfers to hotel on arrival and to airport or railway station
on departure.

IMPORTANT DEADLINES

15 November 1999: reply to the first circular
31 January 2000: reply to the second circular (abstract + payment for hotel
reservation)
Late March 2000: reply to the third circular (your scheduled time of
arrival/departure in/from Bordeaux - needed to organize properly your
transfer to/out of the hotel).
