EPILOG has made considerable progress over the last year, as follows:
| 1.) | A summary paper from the first EPILOG open conference (convened by Schneider, Mix, and Bard in Delmenhorst, Germany) was published in Quaternary Science Reviews (Mix, A.C., E. Bard, R. Schneider, 2001, Environmental Processes of the Ice Age: Land, Ocean, Glaciers (EPILOG) Quaternary Science Reviews, 20/4, 627-657), along with news reports the PAGES newsletter and the IGBP Newsletter (Schneider, R., E. Bard, and A.C. Mix, 2000, Environmental Processes of the Ice Age: Land, Ocean, Glaciers. PAGES Newsletter, June, 2000; Schneider, R., E. Bard, and A.C. Mix, 2000, Last Ice Age global ocean and land surface temperatures: The EPILOG initiative, IGBP Newsletter 43, 4-7). The point of the Delmenhorst meeting was to establish EPILOG as a program, to review the state of the art and define the major issues to be addressed, and to set basic protocols for contributions to a future EPILOG synthesis. Based on numerous requests for reprints of this paper, the establishment of EPILOG as a community program appears to have been successful. |
| 2.) | A second EPILOG conference at Mt. Hood Oregon was convened in Fall, 2000 by Clark, Mix, and Bard, with funding from NSF, IMAGES, IGBP/PAGES, INQUA, and Oregon State University. This meeting of about 50 people focused on the global ice sheets at the LGM. A meeting report has been published (Clark, P.D., A.C. Mix, and E. Bard, 2001, Ice Sheets and Sea Levels of the Last Glacial Maximum. EOS, 82(22), 241-247). A special issue of QSR has attracted more than 25 papers from meeting participants. The review process is nearly complete, and publication of the special issue is expected in early 2002. |

| 4.) | An EPILOG session is planned for the AGU annual meeting in San Francisco, December 2001, to encourage consideration of LGM deep-water circulation (Oppo and Michel, organizers). |
| 5.) | A third EPILOG conference is tentatively planned for Davos Switzerland, in August of 2002, topic - the ocean interior and its role in climate change. Organizers are Stocker, Bard, and Mix. Bard and Stocker are seeking European funds for partial meeting support. Mix has contacted NSF for partial funding of US travel, and has received encouragement for this meeting. Partial support from IMAGES (discussed at a previous SCICOM meeting) will be important to "seed" this meeting. |

Unfortunately, proposals related to EPILOG science activities in the US were rejected by NSF. US investigators are struggling to participate in EPILOG activities under difficult conditions. |
