Russia Report (Michael Levitan)

1. In 1997 and 1998 Shirshov Institute of Oceanology carried out 4
cruises in the Norwegian, Barents, Pechora and Kara Seas. These cruises
have been devoted to different oceanological problems in the fields of
climatology, physical oceanography, marine biology, geoecology and
marine geology. Totally we've obtained 37 sediment cores for IMAGES-type
of study (11 cruise of R/V "Academic Sergey Vavilov" {11ASV} - 16
sed.cores, 12ASV - 5,13ASV - 1, 14ASV - 15). Max. core length - 6 m.

Together with our colleagues from Pacific oceanological institute
(Vladivostok) and German colleagues we carried out the cruise of R/V
"Vulkanolog" in the Sea of Okhotsk (1997)and obtained 8 sediment cores
with length up to 10 m.

All these cores now are in process of their study using
sedimentological, micropaleontological, geochemical and isotope methods.
A lot of work is doing together with colleagues from France, Germany,
U.S.A.,and other countries. Some preliminary results will be presented
in Brest.Just now new cruise in the Sea of Okhotsk is in process.

2. We continued the study of sediment cores from earlier cruises in
the Atlantic, Arctic and Pacific Oceans.

3. The work in the fields of new mathematical approachs to
paleotemperature analysis, climate and circulation modelling also have
been done.
