In 2000 main efforts of IMAGES-related Russian paleoceanographers were concentrated in two areas: the Western Arctic and the Sea of Okhotsk. In both regions the scientific collaboration with colleagues from other countries took place.
The Arctic is an area of joint efforts of German, American, French, and Russian scientists. The most fruitful cooperation in the Sea of Okhotsk took place in the frames of COMEX - joint Russian-German project, with some participation of specialists from USA, Japan, Taiwan. To coordinate these efforts Russian IMAGES Working Group organised in spring 2000 an International Workshop devoted to correlation of late glacial to Holocene events in the Arctic and Far Eastern Seas. The report about this meeting was sent in IMAGES secretariat. Brief version of the report should be published in PAGES Newsletters (2001). 2000 year was the last year of bilateral French-Russian cooperation in the Western Arctic. A lot of work was done in the field of sedimentology, mineralogy, planktonic and benthic foraminifers, stable isotopes and AMS C-14 dating performed on samples from the Barents and Kara Seas. As result, we have a high-resolution record of paleoclimatic and paleoceanographic variability related to changes in Atlantic Water inflow, Siberian rivers runoff, sea-ice cover during the late Weichselian, deglaciation and Holocene.
In 2000 we started to work together with German colleagues in the frames of SIRRO project in the Kara Sea. At least part of the project will be devoted to high-resolution study of Ob' and Yenisei runoff. Now this work is in progress. In the Sea of Okhotsk we managed to obtain rather long (up to 11 m) sediment cores covered last 350 kyr of geological history. Very active work of joint Russian-German scientific team is reflected in a number of publications. Main results concern stratigraphy, the history of ice sedimentation, paleoproductivity reconstructions, climatic variability connected with Milankovich cycles, etc.
The list of publications gives an impression about main problems which are studying by Russian IMAGES-related scientists.
