Dufresne Shipboard Time available in May, June, July 2003
Shipboard time on board RV "Marion Dufresne" is available for externally
funded groups, interested in MD coring facilities for the spring 2003
in the NW Atlantic.
The vessel needs to finish various operations that have been cancelled
in last summer and last years (European program Calypso and French planned
operations in the Caribbean, plus some older residuals). In addition about
10 days may be available for additional science work between Cariaco (around
May 10), and the US East coast (around June 10).
Subsequently the ship will cross to Brest. Planning of the subsequent
return trip to La Reunion is not finalized yet, due to conflicting programs
in the Mediterranean sea and along the western continental margin of Africa.
Because of international conflicts in the Arabian Sea, the most probable
program for MD will be European Calypso, with work on the Iberian Margin
and off West Africa, during July. Very small time (up to 1-3 days) will
be available for other projects in this region.
Cost conditions: 40k$ per day providing approximately 2 times 4 hours
for giant coring operations, and a shared contribution to transit costs
over the whole cruise, if the proposed site lies on the general track
of the cruise.
Because of the delays in ZEE clearance, there is URGENT NEED to learn
a.s.a.p. who is interested to submit a coring proposal (PI, few lines
on project with zone and number/type of operations, dates of final "yes
or no", funding). Both the Calypso giant gravity corer (1 square foot
area, 10 m length) and piston corer (40-60 m length, 10 cm diameter) are
fully operational.
